World premiere: IDFA 2021, International Competition
Ouloulou, Baldé and Doucouré are young men from West Africa who crossed the Mediterranean to Spain. They say they survived the journey mainly thanks to their marabout or spiritual guides. Once in Spain, they stay in contact with their guide in the hope that he can improve their current living conditions. At the same time in Mali, Bakary prepares for his upcoming trip under the guidance of his marabout. For the young people in Taamaden, their smartphone has become an indispensable digital gri-gri, or talisman. Their hectic daily lives are a world in which African spirituality and the latest technologies are inextricably linked.
Taamaden is part of Generation Africa, a project of STEPS (South Africa).
