World premiere: IFFR 2023 / Opening Film
Alfred Ekker Strande (IDA TAKES CHARGE), Mattis Herman Nyquist (HEADHUNTERS), Ola G. Furuseth (MADE IN OSLO) and Anne Krigsvoll (LILYHAMMER) each interpret the world-famous Norwegian painter Edvard Munch in different periods of his life. MUNCH tells the story of the young Edvard Munch's first love, with a married woman, and further about his defeat as an artist after his first exhibition in Berlin is rejected. The film also depicts Munch's dramatic admission to a nerve clinic in Copenhagen, where he is forced to make the biggest and most decisive choice of his life, before we see him fight a hard battle in the final phase of his life to save his artistic heritage from the Nazis during the war. The four parts have each been filmed with different camera aesthetics in order to give the viewer four contrasting visual impressions.
